AT&T Delays iPhone 4 Retail Sale Date

iPhone 4 orders had to stop last week due to such high demand. The Apple smartphone will be available through AT&T starting June 29th.

Tuesday AT&T said they would start notifying people who pre-ordered the iPhone4 when their order has been shipped. People who preordered the device at AT&T stores would receive telephone calls from the carrier's representatives when the buyer's iPhone arrives.

On June 29, AT&T will offer the iPhone 4 on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. If inventory sells out, AT&T will offer customers the option of buying the device and having it delivered to a home or business or an AT&T store. Customers will receive an email when their order is available.

AT&T halted sales of the iPhone 4 June 16, one day after the smartphone became available for preorders. The carrier was forced to suspend taking orders because it was unable to keep up with demand.



AT&T wasn't alone in suspending sales. Apple moved back the date on which customers who ordered the device can expect to receive one. The company originally planned to ship preordered phones June 24, and then moved the date back to July 2. IPhone 4s ordered as of Tuesday were not scheduled to ship until July 14.

While the delays are an inconvenience to iPhone fans, they're also a sign that Apple may have another big hit. The iPhone follows on the heels of the iPad, a tablet-style computer Apple started selling in April. As of Monday, Apple had sold 3 million iPads, according to the company.

The iPhone 4 features a number of improvements over its predecessor, the iPhone 3GS. The enhancements include higher screen resolution, a front-facing camera for video chats and a longer lasting battery. The device is also 24% thinner.

New Droid

The first Droid was excellent, while great for what it could do it was fairly chunky and had “ok” battery life. It ran an old Android 2.0(I guess that version would be considered old) operating system and the keyboard wasn’t the easiest to use. Motorola listened to the complaints and went back to the lab and they are coming out with a second version of the Droid.



The first thing they did was double the speed of the CPU from 500MHz to 1 GHz. They were able to do this because the Texas Instruments OMAP 3630 inside was built on a 45 nanometer process. Smaller transistors enable raw clock frequency to go up, while at the same time they also require less power to operate. The Apple A4 chip for example, or the Samsung chip inside their flagship Bada powered S8500, both use 45 nanometer processes.

The directional pad got replaced with arrow keys. The gold trimming, which I though was gorgeous, but many of you complained looked tacky, or worse yet a poor attempt at imitating something out of a Batman comic, has been replaced with silver trimming. Speaking of trimming, the device got a bit thinner, and … well that’s it really.

Expect this device to launch some time in the summer of 2010, probably right before back to school season

EVO 4G in white?

Just when America’s first 4G phone could not get any hotter, along comes this… a striking hot white version of the HTC EVO 4G(so much for that unavailable white iPhone4 huh). I’ve received confirmation that there is a white EVO 4G coming and sold exclusively through Best Buy with an official launch date for July 11th. I am also told that Sprint will eventually sell the white EVO 4G as well but not until August 8th with other retailers joining in sometime in September. So, if you were someone who managed to hold off from getting the black EVO 4G you can pre-order the white version from Best Buy now.

Droid X sooner than later?

Looks like Motorola and Verizon are coming clean with the Droid X a little earlier than planned. It just appeared on the official Droid page. It will host a 4.3 inch screen. Interestingly enough, rolling over the image reveals a box that says it has a “720 screen” which would be outrageous….especially since the Droid X prototype had what looked to be the same 854 x 4480 resolution as the original Droid, although that couldn’t be confirmed at that time. A true 720p screen res would also be far denser that the 800 x 480 on the EVO 4G, so I am thinking that Verizon actually means 720p out over HDMI. Only time will tell…the official launch is still set for June 23 and I am still waiting to find out about the slider Droid 2, so that means there are a lot of potential surprises yet to come.

EVo Back in stock at Sprint

Have you tried to purchase the HTC EVO 4G just to get told by the staff that they are currently out of stock? If you are not aware of the situation from last time the EVO 4G was so in demand that it already became sold out during the last couple of weeks.

Although there are still no official announcements from Sprint, it is so obvious that they already have new shipment of the device. Of course they would not let their website take orders online just to create anticipation and frustration especially now that iPhone 4 is coming soon. This is actually the second time that the HTC EVO 4G became sold out since Sprint released it this month.

When T-Mobile launched HTC HD2, the model also became unavailable for numerous times since the smartphone was released. At the same time, the HTC Droid Incredible from Verizon is also sold out as of the moment. Verizon is still ordering more from the manufacturer and hopefully the new shipment will come soon. The Motorola Droid is also sold out as well. The CEO of Motorola admitted that they still can’t have more stock of the said smartphone as of now.

HTC is really making a big splash in the market now and they may become a formidable opponent to Apple with the upcoming launch of the iPhone4.

HTC EVO 4G News Update

On June 4th Sprint released the HTC EVO 4G to excellent reviews. A couple of days later the carrier announced that the EVO 4G had broken the carrier’s launch day sales record, even selling “three times” as many units as the Palm Pre and Samsung Instinct did combined on their respective release days.
A few days later however, the nation’s third biggest carrier apologized for overstating the figures.

Today I am reporting that there was an under the radar part of the story, in which a Sprint employee was fired for posting unofficial sales numbers online, using the company’s inventory system.

The original post was made on XDA-Developers, but was taken down since. Part of the post is still cached, courtesy of Google, and it says: "according to sprint we as a [company] have sold 66,483 theres a whole bunch of stores though that dont have any more inventory i dont think any major city sprint does." The post was made June 6th, one day before Sprint posted any numbers.

The 66,483 units sold was from Sprint stores only, and did not include those sold through WalMart, RadioShack and other retailers.
After the post, an internal Sprint team member traced the post back to an employee in Florida, and the employee was fired the next day.
